TPBi, or 2,2',2"-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (CAS 192198-85-9), is an electron-deficient benzimidazole derivative widely chosen as an electron transport layer (ETL) material in optoelectronic devices. Product code M651 is the sublimed grade with purity above 99.5%, supplied as a white powder.
Its low LUMO level of 2.7 eV makes TPBi suitable as a host for both fluorescent and phosphorescent emitters, while its very deep HOMO level (6.2/6.7 eV) gives it strong hole blocking ability. Because it combines electron transport and hole blocking, TPBi can stand in for a CBP hole blocking layer plus an Alq3 electron transport layer, simplifying the device stack.
TPBi has also been reported as a thin electron injection interlayer between Alq3 and a Cs2O3/Al electrode, where it assists electron injection and contributes to hole blocking and exciton confinement. Sublimation is used to reach this ultra-pure grade for demanding thin-film device work.
