TPBi, or 2,2',2"-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (CAS 192198-85-9), is a benzimidazole derivative supplied by Ossila under code M652 as the unsublimed grade with >98.0% purity. It is a white powder with a molecular weight of 654.76 g/mol.
Because the molecule is electron deficient, TPBi is widely chosen as the electron transport layer in optoelectronic devices. Its low LUMO level (2.7 eV) also makes it suitable as a host for fluorescent and phosphorescent emitters, while its very deep HOMO (6.2/6.7 eV) gives it strong hole blocking behaviour.
These combined properties let device builders replace a separate CBP hole blocking layer and Alq3 electron transport layer with TPBi alone, simplifying the stack. A thin TPBi film placed between Alq3 and a Cs2O3/Al electrode has been reported to improve electron injection while also contributing to hole blocking and exciton confinement.
- Electron transport layer in OLEDs and other light-emitting diodes, including perovskite LEDs.
- Host material for fluorescent and phosphorescent emissive layers.
- Hole blocking layer that confines excitons within the emissive zone.
- Electron injection interlayer between Alq3 and Cs2O3/Al cathodes.
- Research on organic electronic devices such as FETs, LEDs and PVs.
