This silicon carbide (SiC) micron powder from Nanografi is a coarse grit grade with a nominal particle size of 250 µm and a stated purity of 99.9% (CAS 409-21-2). At this size the particles behave as distinct grit, making the material a fit for fast stock removal in grinding, lapping and blasting, and for use as a refractory aggregate.
Larger particles offer fewer but heavier-loaded cutting points, so they remove material quickly and leave a rougher surface; finer grades are then used for finishing passes. The higher stated purity is relevant where residual free carbon or metallic elements could cause problems, such as in semiconductor-adjacent parts, high-temperature service or abrasive work where contamination may transfer to the workpiece.
Silicon carbide combines a hardness of 9.5 Mohs, a density of 3.216 g/cm³ at 288 K and very low thermal expansion, which explains its dual role as an abrasive and a thermal-shock-resistant refractory. Because of its low specific surface area, this grade is not intended as a sintering powder for structural ceramics, though it can serve as an aggregate phase within a fine matrix.
- Polishing abrasives and grinding wheels for rapid stock removal.
- Grinding, lapping and blasting media.
- High-grade refractory bodies and kiln furniture.
- High-temperature sealing valves, spray nozzles and fluid transport parts.
- Reinforcing or wear-resistant phase in composite materials.
- Aggregate phase within fine-matrix ceramic bodies.
