TCI B6766 Benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-Dioxide is the fully oxidised sulfone derivative of benzothiophene, in which the strongly electron-withdrawing sulfonyl group renders the five-membered ring markedly electron-poor. This reactivity profile makes it a valuable dienophile in Diels-Alder cycloadditions and an acceptor in conjugate addition chemistry. Cycloadducts derived from it can often extrude sulfur dioxide, providing an elegant route to fused polycyclic aromatic frameworks.
