TCI 5,5',6,6'-Tetrahydro-2,2'-bi[1,3]dithiolo[4,5-b][1,4]dithiinylidene is better known as BEDT-TTF, or simply "ET", short for bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene. It is a derivative of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), one of the best-known organic electron donors in the field of molecular conductors. In materials science and solid-state physics laboratories, BEDT-TTF is used to prepare charge-transfer salts and radical-cation salts. These salts can be conductive and even superconductive, which makes this compound an important subject of research.

Researchers choose BEDT-TTF because it gives up electrons easily and forms a stable radical cation. The many sulfur atoms around the edge of the molecule allow strong intermolecular S···S interactions. Inside the crystal, these interactions build a two-dimensional electronic network. This arrangement explains the wide range of electronic behaviour seen in BEDT-TTF salts, which can act as semiconductors, metals, or organic superconductors. The compound is usually co-crystallised with a suitable anion by electrocrystallisation, which yields high-quality single crystals for measurement and structural study.

In Indonesia, research on organic conductors and molecular electronics continues to grow in university and research-institute laboratories that work in materials science, solid-state chemistry, and condensed-matter physics. BEDT-TTF serves these groups as a reference donor molecule for synthesising new charge-transfer and radical-cation salts, for teaching the principles of molecular conductivity, and for exploratory work on organic electronic materials. Sourcing it from a recognised brand such as TCI gives research teams consistent starting material for reproducible crystal growth and physical measurements.

TCI brochures (PDF)

  • Synthesis of charge-transfer salts: BEDT-TTF is a strong organic electron donor that pairs readily with acceptors, making it a standard starting point for preparing new charge-transfer complexes.
  • Preparation of radical-cation salts: the molecule easily loses an electron to form a stable radical cation, which can be combined with a suitable anion to give conductive crystalline salts.
  • Electrocrystallisation of single crystals: BEDT-TTF is routinely co-crystallised with chosen anions by electrocrystallisation, producing high-quality single crystals suitable for structural and electrical characterisation.
  • Organic superconductor research: some BEDT-TTF salts show superconductivity, so the compound is widely used in solid-state physics studies of superconducting behaviour in molecular materials.
  • Studies of two-dimensional electronic networks: strong S···S interactions between molecules create two-dimensional electronic arrangements in the crystal, ideal for investigating structure–property relationships in molecular conductors.

Keep BEDT-TTF in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct light, heat sources, and strong oxidising agents. Always follow the storage temperature and any special conditions given on the TCI label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Handle the material in a fume hood or another well-ventilated area, and wear standard laboratory protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses, and a lab coat. Avoid making dust and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Reseal the container promptly after each use to protect the compound from moisture and air. Dispose of residues and contaminated materials according to your institution's chemical waste procedures and local regulations.
