TCI C1551 4-Cyano-4'-pentyloxybiphenyl, commonly abbreviated 5OCB, is the alkoxy analogue of the classic cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal family. The ether linkage between the biphenyl core and the pentyl chain strengthens intermolecular interactions, giving mesomorphic behaviour that differs noticeably from its alkyl counterpart. It is frequently used to study structure–property relationships, to build eutectic mixtures with wider nematic ranges, and as a model material in thermal analysis and hot-stage polarized microscopy.
