Phenyl Ether from TCI (product code P0177), also known as diphenyl ether, is a simple aromatic compound made of two phenyl rings joined by a single oxygen atom. In the laboratory it works both as a non-heterocyclic building block and as a high-boiling solvent. The diaryl ether structure appears in many pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, high-performance polymers and fragrance materials, so diphenyl ether is often used as a starting material or a model compound in research and development work.

Researchers choose diphenyl ether mainly for its excellent thermal and chemical stability. Its aromatic ether bond does not break easily, and its high boiling point makes it a good medium for high-temperature reactions that ordinary solvents cannot reach. Its melting point is close to room temperature, so the material may look solid or liquid depending on the surrounding temperature. Its aromatic rings can also be functionalised through electrophilic substitution to make new derivatives. Its distinctive geranium-like odour has also made it well known in the fragrance industry.

In Indonesian laboratories, diphenyl ether is often used to synthesise heterocyclic compounds at high temperatures, where a stable, high-boiling medium is needed to drive cyclisation and condensation steps. University research groups, pharmaceutical development teams and polymer laboratories use it as a reaction solvent and as a precursor for functionalised diaryl ether derivatives. Because it is a TCI reagent, laboratories can expect consistent quality from batch to batch, which helps make their synthetic work and analytical comparisons easier to repeat.

  • High-temperature reaction medium: its high boiling point and thermal stability let chemists run reactions at temperatures that ordinary laboratory solvents cannot safely reach or hold.
  • Heterocyclic compound synthesis: it is often chosen as the solvent for high-temperature cyclisation steps that build heterocyclic ring systems, because it stays stable under those harsh conditions.
  • Building block for diaryl ether derivatives: its aromatic rings can undergo electrophilic substitution, which gives researchers a simple route to new functionalised diaryl ether compounds for further synthesis.
  • Model compound for structural studies: the diaryl ether motif is common in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and polymers, so this simple molecule is a useful reference for studying how that linkage behaves.
  • Fragrance and odour research: its characteristic geranium-like aroma makes it a relevant reference material for laboratories that study or develop fragrance ingredients and aromatic odour profiles.

Physical form solid or liquid depending on ambient temperature, as its melting point is close to room temperature
Storage keep in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place; follow the manufacturer's label and SDS

Store Phenyl Ether in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and strong oxidising agents. Because its melting point is close to room temperature, the material may solidify or liquefy as conditions change; if it has solidified, warm it gently before you dispense it. Use glass or other chemically compatible containers, and label them clearly. When handling it, wear suitable personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses and a laboratory coat. Work in a fume hood or a well-ventilated space, especially at high temperatures, and avoid inhaling vapours or letting it touch your skin and eyes. Always read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use, and dispose of waste according to local regulations.
