1-Phenylimidazole from TCI is a heterocyclic compound made of an imidazole ring with a phenyl group attached to the nitrogen atom at position 1. In chemistry laboratories it serves as a building block for synthesising molecules that contain the N-arylimidazole motif. It is also used as a ligand in coordination chemistry and as a precursor for imidazolium salts. In biochemistry laboratories, substituted imidazoles of this type are known as model compounds for studying interactions with cytochrome P450 enzymes.

Researchers choose this compound because the nitrogen atom at position 3 of its imidazole ring stays free and basic. That nitrogen can bind metal ions or act as a nucleophile, while position 1 is already blocked by the phenyl group. Because of this, the compound does not undergo the tautomerism seen in plain imidazole, so it behaves more predictably in reactions. The phenyl group also makes the molecule more lipophilic and changes the electronic character of the ring. Together, these features help researchers tune how strongly a ligand coordinates to a metal, or adjust the properties of the ionic liquids made from it.

In Indonesia, coordination chemistry, ionic liquid synthesis and heterocycle-based medicinal chemistry are active research areas in many university chemistry departments. 1-Phenylimidazole is a practical reagent for these groups. Graduate students and lecturers use it to prepare new metal complexes, make imidazolium salts for ionic liquid studies, and build N-arylimidazole scaffolds for medicinal chemistry projects. Biochemistry groups studying enzyme–inhibitor interactions can also use it as a well-characterised model compound in their experimental work.

TCI brochures (PDF)

  • Heterocyclic building block synthesis: the preinstalled N-phenyl group gives a ready N-arylimidazole motif, so researchers can build target molecules without adding the aryl group themselves.
  • Coordination chemistry ligand: the free, basic nitrogen at position 3 binds metal ions, while the phenyl group changes the ring's electronic properties to adjust coordination strength.
  • Imidazolium salt and ionic liquid preparation: the nucleophilic nitrogen at position 3 can be alkylated to form imidazolium salts, and the phenyl group affects the lipophilicity of the resulting ionic liquids.
  • Cytochrome P450 interaction studies: substituted imidazoles like this one are recognised model compounds for studying how heterocyclic ligands interact with the heme-containing active site of these enzymes.
  • Mechanistic and reactivity studies: because position 1 is blocked and the ring cannot tautomerise, the compound behaves predictably, which makes it a useful reference substrate for comparing reaction outcomes.
