TCI P2362 5H-Pyrido[4,3-b]indole, also known as γ-carboline, is a tricyclic aromatic heterocyclic compound. Its structure resembles carbazole, but one of the benzene rings is replaced by a pyridine ring. TCI classifies this compound as a small molecule semiconductor building block. In the laboratory, γ-carboline serves as a core for designing organic electronic materials, especially host materials and electron-transport materials. The carboline framework is also important in medicinal chemistry as a scaffold for bioactive compounds.
Researchers choose this compound because the pyridine nitrogen makes the framework more electron-deficient than carbazole. This shifts the molecular orbital energy levels and improves electron-accepting ability, while the tricyclic system keeps its rigidity and thermal stability. The N–H group on the indole ring is easy to functionalise through N-arylation or N-alkylation, so many derivatives can be built from one core. Because one molecule has both a donor part (indole) and an acceptor part (pyridine), it is an attractive bipolar framework for OLED devices.
In Indonesia, γ-carboline suits organic materials and materials physics research groups that design bipolar hosts, TADF emitters, or electron-transport materials for organic light-emitting devices. University chemistry departments and research institutes working on organic synthesis can use it as a starting scaffold for new derivatives. Medicinal chemistry groups exploring carboline-based bioactive compounds may also find it useful as a core structure for building and comparing compound series in their synthesis programmes.

- Bipolar host material design: the indole donor and pyridine acceptor in one rigid molecule help balance hole and electron transport in OLED emissive layers.
- Electron-transport material development: the electron-deficient pyridine nitrogen lowers the orbital energy levels compared with carbazole, which improves the core's electron-accepting ability.
- TADF emitter synthesis: the γ-carboline core can act as a building unit within donor–acceptor architectures studied for thermally activated delayed fluorescence in organic electronics research.
- N-functionalisation studies: the reactive N–H group on the indole ring allows N-arylation or N-alkylation, so researchers can build libraries of substituted carboline derivatives.
- Medicinal chemistry scaffold work: the carboline framework is known as a scaffold for bioactive compounds, which makes it a practical starting point for structure–activity exploration.

Keep 5H-Pyrido[4,3-b]indole in its original, tightly closed manufacturer container. Store it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct light, heat sources, and incompatible substances such as strong oxidising agents. Always follow the storage conditions on the TCI label and Safety Data Sheet. Handle the compound in a fume hood or well-ventilated area, and wear suitable gloves, safety glasses, and a lab coat. Avoid making dust, breathing it in, or letting it touch skin or eyes. Reseal the container right after use so the material is not exposed to moisture or contamination, and dispose of waste according to local laboratory chemical waste rules.
