Span 80, also known as Sorbitan Monooleate (CAS 1338-43-8), is a nonionic surfactant in the sorbitan ester family, made from sorbitol and oleic acid. This TCI product is one of the most widely used emulsifiers in chemistry, pharmaceutical, and materials science laboratories. Its main job is to stabilise emulsions, especially water-in-oil systems, and to help disperse solid particles in organic phases. Within the polymer additives category, Span 80 is also used to modify interfacial properties in polymer and composite systems.
Span 80 has a long, unsaturated oleate chain, so it is more lipophilic than sorbitan esters with shorter chains. This makes it well suited to formulations where oil is the continuous phase. The double bond in the oleate chain also means it tends to be liquid at room temperature, so researchers can blend it into mixtures without excessive heating. Span 80 is often paired with polysorbates such as Tween 80 to reach a target hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. Because it is nonionic, it tolerates reasonable changes in pH and salt content within a formulation, which makes it a dependable and versatile choice.
In Indonesia, Span 80 is widely used in undergraduate, master's, and doctoral thesis research. University laboratories in pharmacy, chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science use it to prepare emulsions, microemulsions, and dispersed systems for formulation studies. Research groups working on polymer composites and particle synthesis also use it to control interfacial behaviour. Having a consistent, well-known TCI grade lets students and researchers repeat procedures from the literature and compare their results with confidence.

- Water-in-oil emulsion preparation: Span 80 is strongly lipophilic, so it stabilises water droplets dispersed in a continuous oil phase in a wide range of experimental formulations.
- Combined emulsifier systems with Tween 80: Researchers blend Span 80 with polysorbates to adjust the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance precisely for their specific oil and water phase requirements.
- Dispersion of solid particles in organic media: Span 80 helps wet and separate solid particles in organic phases, which reduces agglomeration and gives more uniform dispersions for further study.
- Interfacial modification in polymer and composite systems: As a polymer additive, it adjusts interfacial properties between components, which can improve compatibility and the consistency of composite preparation.
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulation research: Its nonionic character and tolerance of pH and salt variation make it a practical emulsifier for developing creams, ointments, and other emulsion-based formulations.

| Storage | keep in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place |
Store Span 80 in its original, tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and strong oxidising agents. Because the oleate chain is unsaturated, limit air exposure by closing the container promptly after each use. Glass or chemically compatible plastic containers work well for any aliquots you transfer. Follow standard laboratory practice: wear gloves, safety glasses, and a lab coat, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and clean up spills promptly to prevent slippery surfaces. Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) supplied with the product before use, and dispose of waste according to your institution's procedures and local regulations.
