This bis(indolyl)phthalide compound is a lactone-type leuco dye that remains colourless in its closed-ring form. Contact with an acidic developer opens the lactone ring, extending the conjugated system and producing a distinct colour change that is often reversible. The N-octyl chains improve solubility in organic media and compatibility with wax and polymer matrices used in thermal recording layers. TCI supplies the dye in a 25 g pack size for research into heat-sensitive and pressure-sensitive materials.
