1-Chloro-2-methylpropane (TCI C0207, CAS 513-36-0), known as isobutyl chloride, is a branched primary alkyl halide supplied as a liquid. It is used to introduce the isobutyl group into nucleophiles and to prepare Grignard reagents for chain-extension chemistry. Its beta-branching also makes it a useful example when comparing steric effects on nucleophilic substitution rates.
