2-Chloro-2-methylpropane (TCI C0208, CAS 507-20-0), widely known as tert-butyl chloride, is a tertiary alkyl halide supplied as a liquid. Its rapid ionisation to a stable tert-butyl carbocation makes it the classic substrate for SN1 solvolysis kinetics and solvent-effect studies. In synthesis it acts as a tert-butyl source for Friedel-Crafts alkylation and related derivatisation reactions.
