Diethyl cyclopentylmalonate is a mono-substituted malonic ester bearing a cyclopentyl group on its active methine carbon. The remaining acidic proton allows a second alkylation under standard malonic ester synthesis conditions, giving straightforward access to quaternary or disubstituted carbon centres. Subsequent hydrolysis and decarboxylation deliver cyclopentylacetic acid derivatives, while condensation routes lead to pyrimidinedione and related heterocycles of medicinal and agrochemical interest.
