Description

TCI H0084 1,5-Hexadiene is an unsaturated six-carbon hydrocarbon carrying two terminal double bonds, one at each end of the chain and separated by two saturated carbons in the middle. This symmetrical arrangement, with two free vinyl groups, makes it a highly useful building block in synthetic laboratories and in polymer chemistry. The two reactive ends allow the molecule to act as a linker joining two fragments at once, or as a monomer that generates chains and networks when reacted through polymerization, metathesis, or controlled hydrosilylation.

The property that makes it a popular choice is the presence of terminal double bonds, which are more readily approached by catalysts than internal double bonds. The terminal vinyl groups react rapidly in acyclic diene metathesis, hydroboration, epoxidation, and a variety of radical and catalytic addition reactions.
