4-Nitro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole is a benzothiadiazole (BTD) derivative with a nitro group at the 4-position of the fused ring system. TCI supplies it as a heterocyclic building block for synthetic research. The 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole core is a well-known strong electron-accepting unit, used widely in organic materials chemistry and in the development of fluorescent compounds. In the laboratory, this nitro compound is most often used as a precursor to 4-amino-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole by reduction. The amine can then be taken on to dyes, probes, and other synthetic intermediates.

The electron-deficient BTD core is what makes this compound's derivatives attractive for donor–acceptor systems. In these systems, charge-transfer interactions give optical and electronic properties that researchers can tune. The nitro group makes the scaffold even more electron-withdrawing. It is also a convenient synthetic handle that is easy to convert. Once reduced to the amine, it can be acylated, turned into a diazonium salt, or used in coupling reactions to build larger molecules. BTD derivatives are also known for environment-sensitive fluorescence, which makes them useful in imaging-probe research. This combination of electronic character and synthetic flexibility makes the compound a practical starting point for many research programmes.

In Indonesia, this material suits research groups in organic materials, photophysics, and organic solar cells, as well as teams developing fluorescent probes. University chemistry departments and research institutes can use it for multi-step synthesis. There it serves as the entry point to amino-BTD intermediates and the larger conjugated molecules built from them. Graduate students and researchers studying structure–property relationships in donor–acceptor molecules will find it a dependable, well-defined heterocyclic building block from an established reagent brand.

  • Preparation of 4-amino-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole: the nitro group can be reduced to the corresponding amine, which is the most common laboratory use of this compound and opens the way to further functionalisation.
  • Synthesis of donor–acceptor materials: the strongly electron-accepting BTD core supports charge-transfer interactions, so researchers can tune the optical and electronic properties of new organic materials.
  • Development of fluorescent probes: BTD derivatives show environment-sensitive fluorescence, which makes this scaffold a good starting point for designing probes for imaging research.
  • Dye and chromophore synthesis: after reduction, the amine can be acylated, diazotised, or coupled, so chemists can build dyes and extended conjugated chromophores on the benzothiadiazole framework.
  • Organic electronics and organic solar cell research: the electron-deficient heterocycle is a useful acceptor unit for building and studying molecules for organic photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications.

Store 4-Nitro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole in its original, tightly closed container. Keep it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and incompatible materials such as strong reducing agents and strong bases. Check the product label and Safety Data Sheet for any specific temperature requirements. Handle the compound in a fume hood and wear suitable personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, chemical-resistant gloves, and safety glasses. Avoid breathing in dust and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Nitroaromatic compounds should be kept away from open flames and ignition sources. Label every container clearly, and dispose of waste in line with institutional and local chemical waste rules.
