Ammonium 1-Pyrrolidinecarbodithioate from TCI (product code P0644), better known as APDC or ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, is a dithiocarbamate salt. It is supplied as a reagent for atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). In analytical laboratories, APDC works as a chelating agent that forms neutral complexes with many heavy metal ions. These complexes can be extracted into an organic solvent. This lets analysts concentrate metals present at very low levels and separate them from the sample matrix before measurement.
Researchers choose APDC because its dithiocarbamate group binds a wide range of transition and heavy metals, including copper, lead, cadmium, nickel, zinc and iron, across a fairly broad pH range. The complexes it forms are hydrophobic, so they extract easily into solvents such as methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). The APDC-MIBK procedure has long been a standard method for preconcentrating trace metals. This separation also reduces matrix interference, such as the high salt content of seawater, so AAS measurements are more accurate.
In Indonesia, APDC is especially relevant to environmental laboratories, water testing laboratories and fisheries laboratories, which often need to measure trace levels of heavy metals in complex samples. Typical samples include river water, groundwater, seawater, wastewater and aquatic products, where metal levels can be close to or below the direct detection limit of the instrument. Having a reliable reagent from a recognised brand such as TCI helps these laboratories keep trace metal analysis by AAS consistent and repeatable.

- Trace metal preconcentration for AAS: APDC chelates metal ions into extractable complexes, so dilute metals can be concentrated into a small volume of organic solvent before measurement.
- APDC-MIBK solvent extraction: the hydrophobic metal-APDC complexes move readily into methyl isobutyl ketone, which makes this a long-established standard procedure for separating trace metals from aqueous samples.
- Heavy metal analysis in seawater and saline samples: extracting metals away from the high-salt matrix reduces interference, so AAS gives more accurate results for difficult saline samples.
- Environmental and water quality testing: because APDC binds copper, lead, cadmium, nickel, zinc and iron, it supports routine monitoring of several regulated heavy metals in river, ground and wastewater samples.
- Multi-element separation in analytical research: APDC complexes many transition metals over a fairly broad pH range, so researchers can use it to separate several metals from complex matrices in one procedure.

Keep APDC in its original tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Protect it from moisture, heat and direct light, and keep it away from strong oxidising agents and acids. Always follow the storage conditions on the TCI label and SDS. Close the container right after use to protect the reagent's quality, because degraded reagent can affect extraction efficiency and analytical results. Handle the material in a fume hood or well-ventilated area. Wear suitable personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses and a lab coat, and avoid creating or breathing in dust. Organic solvents such as MIBK used in APDC procedures need their own precautions for flammability and ventilation. Dispose of reagent residues and metal-containing extracts according to local laboratory waste regulations.
