TCI P3305 Platinum 3% on Carbon (Modified by Sulfur) is a heterogeneous catalyst made of platinum at a 3% loading on a carbon support. The platinum has been deliberately modified with sulfur, and the catalyst is supplied wetted with approximately 55% water. In the synthesis laboratory, it serves as a hydrogenation catalyst for chemists who need to reduce one specific functional group without affecting other groups in the same molecule that are also susceptible to hydrogenation.
The key advantage of this sulfur-modified platinum catalyst is its selectivity. The sulfur intentionally dampens part of the platinum's activity, so the catalyst can reduce nitro groups to amines while suppressing dehalogenation, the unwanted loss of chlorine, bromine, or iodine atoms from an aromatic ring. With conventional catalysts, this side reaction often lowers yields and complicates purification. Because the sulfur partially poisons the catalyst, it also helps prevent over-reduction of double bonds and other sensitive groups. The water-wetted form, at approximately 55% water, makes the catalyst safer to handle because it reduces the tendency to ignite.
In Indonesia, this catalyst is particularly relevant to laboratories that develop pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates, because many target molecules in these fields carry halogen substituents alongside reducible groups. Research groups at universities, process development teams, and industrial R&D laboratories can use it when standard hydrogenation catalysts give poor selectivity. It is a practical choice for teams that work with halogenated aromatic building blocks and need clean, reproducible reductions with simpler downstream purification.
Advantages (TCI brochure)
- Platinum catalyst modified by organosulfur compounds.
- Almost no dehalogenation even when nitro groups and multiple bonds coexist.
- Effective for hydrogenation of nitro groups and olefins with inhibited dehalogenation.

- Selective nitro-to-amine reduction: the sulfur-modified platinum converts aromatic nitro groups into the corresponding amines while leaving other reducible functionality on the molecule largely intact.
- Hydrogenation of halogenated nitroaromatics: the catalyst suppresses dehalogenation, so chlorine, bromine, or iodine substituents on the aromatic ring are retained during reduction of the nitro group.
- Pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis: many drug-candidate building blocks contain halogens and reducible groups together, and this catalyst helps preserve the intended structure with fewer side products.
- Agrochemical intermediate development: halogenated aniline-type intermediates common in crop-protection chemistry benefit from the catalyst's ability to minimise unwanted dehalogenation and the yield losses it causes.
- Avoiding over-reduction in multifunctional molecules: the partially poisoned platinum surface helps prevent excessive reduction of double bonds and other sensitive groups when only one transformation is wanted.

Keep the catalyst in its original, tightly closed container so that the water content is maintained, because the wetted state is what reduces the catalyst's tendency to ignite. Store it in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, ignition sources, and incompatible materials. Do not let the material dry out during storage or weighing. Handle it with suitable personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses, and a lab coat. Be especially careful when introducing hydrogen or filtering the spent catalyst after a reaction, and keep the used catalyst wet before disposal. Always follow the supplier's Safety Data Sheet and your institution's chemical safety procedures.
