TCI P3306 Platinum 5% on Carbon is a heterogeneous catalyst made of platinum loaded at 5% on a carbon support. It is supplied wetted with approximately 55% water. It is one of the most widely used grades of platinum on carbon in chemistry laboratories, where it serves as a hydrogenation catalyst. Its main uses are hydrogenation of aromatic rings, reduction of nitro groups and reduction of carbonyl compounds. Because the catalyst is a solid, it can be separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration, which makes product work-up shorter and more straightforward.

Compared with the 2% version, the 5% platinum loading gives higher activity per gram of catalyst. This makes it well suited to substrates that are harder to reduce or to reactions that must finish in less time. Platinum behaves differently from palladium. It is generally more effective at saturating aromatic rings, and it is less likely to cause dehalogenation or hydrogenolysis of benzyl groups. The water content of about 55% lowers the risk of the catalyst igniting when it contacts solvent vapour, so it is safer to handle in routine laboratory work than a dry catalyst.

In Indonesian laboratories, this catalyst is used by research groups in organic chemistry and related chemistry fields. University teams use it for synthesis projects that involve reductive steps, and for student research where a selective and easily removed hydrogenation catalyst is needed. Research institutions and industrial development laboratories also use it to explore reduction routes, prepare intermediates and compare catalyst performance. The wetted form suits teaching and research environments where safe day-to-day handling is a priority.

Advantages (TCI brochure)

  • Platinum on activated carbon for general use.
  • Suppresses hydrogenolysis of benzyl compounds such as debenzylation.

  • Aromatic ring hydrogenation: platinum is generally more effective than palladium at saturating aromatic rings, so this catalyst is a strong choice for converting aromatic substrates into their saturated analogues.
  • Nitro group reduction: the 5% platinum loading provides good activity for reducing nitro compounds to the corresponding amines, and filtration removes the solid catalyst cleanly afterwards.
  • Carbonyl compound reduction: the catalyst supports hydrogenation of carbonyl groups, which gives researchers a heterogeneous option that avoids complicated work-up procedures.
  • Hydrogenation of halogen-containing substrates: platinum is less likely than palladium to trigger dehalogenation, so it helps preserve halogen substituents during reduction of other functional groups.
  • Reductions on molecules with benzyl protecting groups: platinum's lower tendency toward benzyl hydrogenolysis makes it useful when benzyl groups must survive the hydrogenation step intact.

Keep the catalyst in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Store it away from flammable solvents, oxidising agents and sources of ignition. Do not let the catalyst dry out, because the water content is what reduces its tendency to ignite. Handle it in a fume hood and wear suitable gloves, safety glasses and a laboratory coat. When filtering the catalyst after a hydrogenation, keep the filter cake moist and never let it dry in air. Spent catalyst should be collected wet in a labelled container and disposed of or recovered according to institutional rules for precious-metal and chemical waste. Always consult the supplier's Safety Data Sheet before use.
