The hydroxyethyl group can be esterified, etherified, activated as a mesylate or tosylate, oxidised, or engaged in Mitsunobu chemistry to connect the piperazine core to other molecular fragments. Acidic removal of the Boc group then liberates the second nitrogen for alkylation, acylation, or amide formation in a controlled sequence.
