TCI C0221, 1-chloro-3-nitrobenzene (CAS 121-73-3), is the meta isomer of the chloronitrobenzene series, in which the nitro group does not directly activate the C–Cl bond toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Its main synthetic value therefore lies in selective nitro reduction to 3-chloroaniline and in transition-metal-catalysed cross-coupling at the aryl chloride, giving controlled access to meta-substituted scaffolds. The same property makes it an excellent teaching comparison against the ortho and para isomers when illustrating substituent effects on reaction rate.
