Amines, phenoxides, alkoxides, and thiolates displace the chloride efficiently to give para-nitro derivatives that may be used directly or reduced to the corresponding anilines. Direct reduction of the parent compound affords 4-chloroaniline, a key intermediate for amides, ureas, sulfonamides, and heterocyclic targets.
