Description
Ethylene Cyanohydrin (CAS 109-78-4), also known as 3-hydroxypropionitrile, is a bifunctional TCI reagent bearing both hydroxyl and nitrile groups on a three-carbon chain. Its high polarity gives excellent miscibility with water and polar organic solvents, so it serves both as a synthetic intermediate and as a specialty solvent. The hydroxyl group supports esterification and etherification, while the nitrile can be hydrolyzed or reduced toward hydroxy acids and amino alcohols. AMI Scientific offers this reagent in a 25 mL pack; note that it is toxic and must be handled in a fume hood with appropriate protective equipment.
