TCI C1321 2-Chloromethyl-1,3-dioxolane is a masked chloroacetaldehyde in which the aldehyde is protected as a cyclic acetal. The chloromethyl group alkylates alkoxides, thiolates, amines, and stabilised carbanions, while the dioxolane ring survives basic and nucleophilic conditions. Mild aqueous acid then unmasks the aldehyde for further transformations such as reductive amination or heterocycle formation.
