Description
TCI C1546, Ethyl 2-Cyano-2-methylpropionate (CAS 1572-98-1), combines a nitrile and an ester group on a single gem-dimethyl quaternary carbon. This arrangement makes it a convenient reagent for installing sterically congested quaternary centres that are difficult to construct by other routes. The nitrile can be reduced to a primary amine or hydrolysed to a carboxylic acid, while the ester is available for saponification or transesterification. Supplied by AMI Scientific in 5 g and 25 g packs, this liquid should be handled in a fume hood and stored tightly closed in a cool, dry place.
