Description

Charcoal Activated from TCI is a reagent-grade activated carbon positioned specifically as a catalyst for oxidation reactions using molecular oxygen. Unlike general-purpose activated carbon, which is normally used only as an adsorbent for removing colour, this material is promoted for a catalytic role: the carbon surface, bearing oxygen functional groups at its edges, is able to activate oxygen from the air so that oxidation reactions can proceed without expensive heavy-metal oxidants that generate hazardous waste. This role makes it an important material in the development of more environmentally friendly organic synthesis.

The properties that make this activated carbon a widely preferred choice are its large surface area, its well-developed pore structure, and its nature as an insoluble solid that is easily separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration. Because it contains no transition metals, the risk of metal contamination in the final product can be minimised, which is an important consideration for the synthesis of pharmaceutical substances. The material is also resistant to a broad range of organic solvents and to the temperature conditions commonly encountered in reactions, so it can be used in reflux systems as well as in air-pressurised reactors.

In Indonesian laboratories, this product is typically used in organic synthesis and green chemistry research settings, where oxidation reactions are carried out under molecular oxygen or air rather than with stoichiometric metal oxidants. Its handling as a solid supported catalyst suits both routine bench-scale reflux work and pressurised reactor systems, and the ease of removing it by filtration fits laboratories that need clean workup and low metal contamination in the isolated product.

Laboratory Applications

  • Catalytic oxidation with molecular oxygen: the oxygen functional groups at the carbon edges activate oxygen from the air, allowing oxidation to proceed without heavy-metal oxidants.
  • Green chemistry method development: as a metal-free catalyst it supports research aimed at replacing expensive and hazardous metal oxidants in established oxidation procedures.
  • Pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis: containing no transition metals, it minimises the risk of metal contamination in the final product, an important requirement for pharmaceutical substances.
  • Reflux-based organic synthesis: its resistance to common organic solvents and to typical reaction temperatures makes it suitable for routine bench-scale reflux systems.
  • Pressurised air or oxygen reactor work: the material tolerates the usual reaction conditions and remains an insoluble solid, so it can be used in air-pressurised reactor systems.

Specifications

  • Brand: TCI
  • CAS number: 7440-44-0
  • Catalogue number: C2194
  • Category: Chemistry > Specialty Synthesis > Solid Supported Synthesis
  • Physical form: solid, insoluble in the reaction mixture and separable by filtration
  • Storage: keep in a tightly closed container in a dry place, away from moisture and incompatible materials

Handling and Storage

Store the container tightly closed in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, away from moisture, oxidising agents and sources of ignition, since activated carbon readily adsorbs moisture and vapours from the surrounding air. Use the original container or an equivalent tightly sealing chemical container, and reclose it immediately after each use to preserve the surface activity of the material. Handle the powder in a fume hood or a well-ventilated area to avoid raising dust, and wear a laboratory coat, safety glasses and gloves. Weigh and transfer with clean, dry utensils to prevent contamination, and follow institutional procedures for the disposal of spent catalyst and filtration residues.
