Description

1,4-Diaminoanthraquinone is an anthraquinone derivative carrying two amino groups at the 1 and 4 positions of its conjugated tricyclic framework. As a non-heterocyclic building block, this compound has long been familiar in the world of dyes, since the anthraquinone core is a classical chromophore that produces strong, long-lasting colour. In the laboratory its role goes well beyond colouration alone: the amino groups provide reactive handles for acylation, alkylation, condensation, and further ring formation, while the quinone core contributes redox behaviour useful in functional materials research, sensor development, and electrochemistry.

The property that makes this compound a preferred choice is the pairing of electron-donating amino groups placed directly opposite the electron-withdrawing carbonyl groups on the same framework. This donor–acceptor arrangement produces light absorption in the visible region and allows both colour and electronic character to be tuned simply by modifying the substituents on nitrogen. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amino and carbonyl groups further stabilises the structure and influences its photophysical behaviour. The anthraquinone core itself is rigid, planar, and thermally resistant, which suits demanding synthetic and materials work.

In Indonesian laboratories, this building block is typically used in university and institutional research groups working on organic synthesis, dye and pigment chemistry, and functional organic materials. It commonly appears in multi-step preparations where a coloured, redox-active anthraquinone scaffold must be elaborated into a target molecule, as well as in teaching and method-development work in synthetic and physical organic chemistry laboratories. As a TCI-branded research chemical, it is normally ordered in research-scale quantities for planned experimental campaigns rather than routine bulk consumption.

Laboratory Applications

  • Dye and pigment synthesis research — the anthraquinone chromophore delivers intense, durable visible-region colour, and the two amino groups allow systematic modification of hue through substitution.
  • Functional organic materials development — the rigid, planar, thermally resistant core combined with donor–acceptor electronic structure makes it a useful scaffold for materials-oriented investigations.
  • Electrochemical and redox studies — the quinone unit provides accessible redox behaviour, making the compound suitable for electrochemistry experiments and redox-active system design.
  • Sensor and probe chemistry — tunable visible absorption plus reactive amino sites let researchers attach recognition units and translate binding events into optical responses.
  • Multi-step organic synthesis as a building block — acylation, alkylation, condensation, and ring-forming reactions at the amino groups give reliable entry points for constructing larger target structures.

Handling and Storage

Store the container tightly closed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from light, heat, and sources of ignition, and keep it separated from strong oxidising agents. The original supplier container is the most suitable primary packaging; if transferring, use clean, chemically compatible, tightly sealing glass or amber glass vessels with clear labelling of the compound name and CAS number. Handle the solid in a fume hood or well-ventilated workspace to avoid generating dust, and wear a laboratory coat, chemical-resistant gloves, and safety glasses. Aminoanthraquinones are strongly coloured and can stain skin, clothing, and equipment, so clean spills promptly with dry collection methods before wiping down surfaces. Wash hands after handling, keep the container closed when not in use, and consult the manufacturer's safety data sheet before first use and for waste disposal guidance.
