Description
TCI G0081 Monolaurin is a monoacylglycerol formed from glycerol and a single molecule of lauric acid, supplied as a solid and classified within the lipid reagent group. In the laboratory it occupies a distinctive position because it combines two roles at once: an effective nonionic emulsifier, and a widely studied substance owing to its antimicrobial activity against a number of gram-positive bacteria, fungi, and lipid-enveloped viruses. These two roles together make it a research material of genuine relevance to food science, microbiology, pharmaceutics, and cosmetics.
The characteristic that leads researchers to select monolaurin is its balanced amphiphilic structure: the glycerol head group, with two free hydroxyls, supplies the polar side, while the twelve-carbon laurate chain supplies a hydrophobic tail of the length recognised as the most biologically active among the monoglycerides. This property gives the compound the ability to lower interfacial tension, to form micelles, and at the same time to interact with the lipid membranes of microorganisms. Its solid form is easy to weigh out, stable under appropriate storage, and uncharged, so that it remains compatible with a wide range of formulation systems.
In Indonesia, monolaurin is handled in the same way as other lipid reagents on the bench. It is weighed as a solid, dissolved or dispersed in a suitable solvent system, and carried into emulsification studies, antimicrobial screening, or formulation trials. University laboratories, food technology groups, pharmaceutical and cosmetic research units, and industrial quality laboratories all work with it in routine bench-scale preparations, where a nonionic emulsifier that is also a subject of biological study serves more than one line of investigation.
Laboratory Applications
- Emulsion preparation and stability studies, where the balanced amphiphilic structure allows monolaurin to lower interfacial tension and stabilise oil-and-water systems without introducing ionic charge.
- Antimicrobial screening against gram-positive bacteria, in which the twelve-carbon laurate chain interacts with microbial lipid membranes and makes the compound a standard comparison material in such assays.
- Antifungal and lipid-enveloped virus research, where the same membrane-interacting behaviour that underlies its antibacterial activity is examined against fungal cells and enveloped viral particles.
- Food science formulation work, since monolaurin functions as a nonionic emulsifier while simultaneously being studied for its biological activity, serving two purposes in one ingredient.
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulation development, because the uncharged solid is easy to weigh accurately and stays compatible with a broad range of formulation systems and excipients.

Handling and Storage
Store monolaurin in its original tightly closed container, kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture, and sources of heat, and follow the storage conditions stated by the manufacturer on the product label. Glass or chemically compatible plastic containers with secure closures are appropriate for both stock and working portions. Handle the solid in a well-ventilated area or fume hood using standard personal protective equipment: safety glasses, gloves, and a laboratory coat. Avoid generating dust while weighing, keep the container sealed when not in use to limit moisture uptake, and label all working aliquots clearly. Consult the manufacturer's safety data sheet before first use and follow institutional procedures for waste disposal.
