Description

Guaiacol Glycerol Ether, better known as guaifenesin, is an ether formed by joining a guaiacol group to a glycerol chain, which gives the molecule a methoxy-substituted aromatic ring together with two aliphatic hydroxyl groups. This combination produces the characteristic intermediate polarity of the compound. In the laboratory it is used as a raw material for pharmaceutical research, as a reference standard in the analysis of cough preparations, and as a model compound in studies of formulation, dissolution, and stability of the widely marketed oral products that contain it.
