TCI H0066 Hexadecane, also known as cetane, is a straight-chain saturated hydrocarbon with sixteen carbon atoms that appears as a colourless liquid at room temperature. It is one of the most important n-alkanes in the laboratory because its name is attached to the concept of the cetane number, the benchmark for the ignition quality of diesel fuel. Beyond that reference role, hexadecane is widely used as a high-boiling non-polar solvent, as the model oil phase in emulsion research, and as a reference compound in chromatographic analysis and hydrocarbon biodegradation studies.
