1-(2-Naphthyl)ethanol is a secondary benzylic alcohol in which a 1-hydroxyethyl group is attached to the 2-position of a naphthalene ring. Supplied by TCI, it is offered as a non-heterocyclic building block for synthetic and analytical work. The molecule has a single chiral centre at the carbon that carries the hydroxyl group. The product name does not state a configuration, so this material is normally supplied as a racemic mixture. In the laboratory, it is used as a model substrate in asymmetric catalysis and kinetic resolution research, and as a starting material for naphthalene derivatives.

Researchers choose this compound mainly because its aromatic naphthalene system absorbs UV light strongly. This makes reactions and separations easy to follow by HPLC and thin-layer chromatography (TLC), with no need for derivatisation. For the same reason, it is often used as a test analyte for separating enantiomers on chiral columns. In the literature, 1-(2-naphthyl)ethanol is the standard product of the asymmetric reduction of 2-acetonaphthone and a common substrate for enzymatic kinetic resolution with lipases. Because it is so widely used as a benchmark, new results can be compared directly with a large body of published data.

In Indonesia, this material is useful to university and research-institute groups working in biocatalysis, asymmetric catalysis, and chiral analytical chemistry. Synthetic chemistry groups use it to benchmark new catalysts or enzyme preparations against established literature results. Analytical laboratories use it to test and compare the performance of chiral stationary phases. Teaching and thesis projects in organic chemistry can also use it as a well-documented starting point for work on stereoselective reactions and on analysing enantiomeric composition.

  • Asymmetric catalysis research: as the standard product of the asymmetric reduction of 2-acetonaphthone, it gives a reference point for measuring how well new catalysts perform against published results.
  • Enzymatic kinetic resolution: it is a common substrate for lipase-catalysed resolution, so biocatalysis groups can compare enzyme activity and selectivity with a large body of existing literature data.
  • Chiral HPLC method testing: its strong UV absorbance and single chiral centre make it a practical test analyte for checking how well chiral columns separate enantiomers.
  • Reaction monitoring by TLC and HPLC: the naphthalene chromophore makes the compound easy to detect, so conversion can be tracked simply and reliably during method development.
  • Synthesis of naphthalene derivatives: as a non-heterocyclic building block with a reactive secondary hydroxyl group, it serves as a convenient starting material for further naphthalene-based compounds.

Storage keep in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place, following the manufacturer's label and Safety Data Sheet
  • Stereochemistry: no configuration stated in the product name; normally supplied as a racemic mixture

Store 1-(2-Naphthyl)ethanol in its original, tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and strong oxidising agents. Reseal the container promptly after each use to limit exposure to moisture and air, and label it clearly with the date it was opened. Handle the material in a fume hood or well-ventilated workspace, and wear standard personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, safety glasses, and chemical-resistant gloves. Avoid breathing in dust or vapour, and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Always read the TCI Safety Data Sheet before use, and dispose of waste according to institutional and local regulations.
