TCI P3298 Palladium 5% on Carbon, LB type, is a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst made of palladium dispersed on a carbon support. It is supplied wet, with a water content of approximately 55%. Catalysts of this kind are central to organic synthesis laboratories because they speed up the addition of hydrogen to many functional groups without being consumed in the reaction. When the reaction is complete, the catalyst is simply filtered off and the product can be isolated cleanly. This also makes later work-up steps such as crystallisation or chromatography easier.
A 5% palladium loading is the usual starting point for many published hydrogenation protocols, so experimental results are easy to compare with the literature. The "LB type" designation marks a distinct formulation variant from the manufacturer. It may differ in activity or selectivity from the LA and M types. This choice is useful when a substrate carries several reducible groups and the researcher wants to find the most selective catalyst for the transformation. Because the catalyst is wetted with water, it is safer to handle: the risk of spontaneous ignition on contact with solvent vapours is significantly reduced compared with dry catalyst.
In Indonesia, this catalyst suits university organic chemistry laboratories, pharmaceutical research and development units, and fine chemical synthesis groups that carry out routine or exploratory hydrogenation work. Research teams can use it to screen catalyst types side by side, reproduce literature procedures, and prepare intermediates for further study. AMI Scientific supplies TCI reagents to laboratories that need a consistent, well-documented catalyst source for their synthetic programmes.

- Catalyst selectivity screening, where the LB type can be compared with the LA and M variants to find the most selective option for substrates with several reducible groups.
- Reproduction of published synthetic procedures, since a 5% palladium loading is a common reference point in the hydrogenation literature and makes results easier to compare.
- Preparation of synthetic intermediates in pharmaceutical and fine chemical research, where simple removal of the catalyst by filtration helps keep later purification steps light.
- Teaching and training in advanced organic chemistry laboratories, where the water-wetted form lowers the ignition risk while students learn heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation techniques.

- Composition: palladium 5% on carbon, LB type
Keep the catalyst in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat, ignition sources and flammable solvents. Do not let the material dry out, because dry palladium on carbon may ignite spontaneously, especially in the presence of solvent vapours or hydrogen. Handle it under an inert atmosphere where practical. Add the catalyst to the reaction vessel before introducing flammable solvents, and keep used catalyst and filter cakes wet before disposal. Wear suitable gloves, safety glasses and a laboratory coat, and work in a fume hood. Always consult the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet before use.
