TCI P3300 Palladium 5% on Carbon, M type, is a heterogeneous palladium catalyst on a carbon support with a 5% metal loading. It is supplied wet, with roughly 55% water. Chemistry laboratories use it widely for hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions, from saturating double bonds to removing protecting groups. As a solid catalyst, its main advantage is easy separation. After the reaction, the catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate can go straight to the next step, with no need to remove dissolved metal residues.

The 5% M type is the companion to the 10% version of the same type. That makes it a good starting point before researchers move to a catalyst with higher activity. The 5% loading often gives more controlled selectivity, for example when a substrate carries groups that should not be reduced along with the target. The wet form, with about 55% water, also makes the catalyst safer to weigh and transfer. Dry palladium on carbon is pyrophoric, and wetting the catalyst greatly reduces that hazard. Together, these properties make it a practical first choice for routine catalytic reductions in research and teaching laboratories.

In Indonesian laboratories, this catalyst suits advanced organic chemistry practicals, final-year undergraduate projects, thesis research and synthetic route development. University research groups and industrial R&D teams can use it to carry out hydrogenation reactions safely and reproducibly. Its role as a lower-loading partner to the 10% version helps chemists screen reaction conditions, compare activity and adjust selectivity before scaling up. Because the catalyst can be removed by simple filtration, it also fits well in teaching laboratories, where workup procedures need to stay simple and safe for students.

  • Hydrogenation of carbon-carbon double bonds: the supported palladium surface efficiently saturates alkenes, and the 5% loading gives controlled activity for substrates that need gentle reduction conditions.
  • Hydrogenolysis and protecting-group removal: the catalyst is widely used to cleave protecting groups by hydrogenolysis, and it can be filtered off easily once deprotection is complete.
  • Selective reductions on functionalized substrates: the lower metal loading often gives more controlled selectivity, which helps when other functional groups in the molecule should stay unreduced.
  • Catalyst screening and method development: as the 5% partner of the 10% M type, it is a logical starting point for comparing activity before moving to a more active catalyst.
  • Advanced organic chemistry teaching and student research: the water-wetted form lowers pyrophoric risk during weighing and transfer, and simple filtration keeps workup straightforward for students and new researchers.

  • Composition: palladium 5% on carbon, M type

Keep the catalyst in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from heat, ignition sources and oxidizing materials. Do not let it dry out, because the water content is what greatly reduces the pyrophoric behavior of palladium on carbon. Weigh and transfer it carefully, preferably under an inert atmosphere when it is added to flammable solvents. After filtration, keep spent catalyst wet with water and do not let the filter cake dry in air. Wear safety glasses, gloves and a lab coat, and follow the TCI safety data sheet and local waste-disposal rules.
