TCI P3299 Palladium 10% on Carbon, M type, is a hydrogenation catalyst made of palladium loaded at 10% onto a carbon support. It is supplied wetted with approximately 55% water. Because it carries more metal than the 5% version, researchers choose it when a reaction needs stronger catalytic activity or when they want to add less catalyst by mass to the reaction vessel. Like other Pd/C catalysts, it works heterogeneously, so it can be separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration once the transformation is complete.

The 10% palladium grade is one of the loadings most often cited in the organic chemistry literature, especially for difficult debenzylations and for reducing substrates that react slowly. The higher metal loading gives more active sites per gram of catalyst, so reactions can run faster under the same conditions. The "M type" designation refers to a specific manufacturer formulation that also comes in a 5% version, which lets researchers compare the effect of metal loading within the same catalyst type. The water content of about 55% reduces the risk of ignition and makes the catalyst safer to handle.

In Indonesian laboratories, this catalyst is useful for university research groups, pharmaceutical and fine-chemical development teams, and synthesis laboratories that run catalytic hydrogenation regularly. It suits work where a 5% catalyst gives slow or incomplete conversion, and it supports method development that compares metal loadings on the same support type. Its wetted form also suits laboratories that want a safer way to handle palladium catalysts during weighing, charging and filtration.

Advantages (TCI brochure)

  • Hydrogenation catalyst for general use.
  • Highly active in a wide range of reactions.

  • Difficult debenzylation reactions: the 10% palladium loading gives more active sites per gram, which helps remove benzyl protecting groups that respond poorly to lower-loaded catalysts.
  • Hydrogenation of slow-reacting substrates: the higher metal content can increase the reaction rate under the same conditions, which helps when conversion with a 5% catalyst is sluggish.
  • Reducing the catalyst mass charged to a reaction: because more palladium is present per gram, chemists can use less total catalyst mass while still providing enough active metal.
  • Comparing metal loadings within one formulation: the M type also comes in a 5% version, so researchers can study how palladium loading affects a reaction without changing the catalyst type.
  • General heterogeneous catalysis where easy workup matters: as a supported Pd/C catalyst, it can be removed from the reaction mixture by filtration, which simplifies product isolation.

Store this catalyst in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from heat, open flames and ignition sources. The water wetting is there to reduce the ignition risk, so do not let the material dry out during storage or handling. Keep it separate from flammable solvents and oxidizing agents when it is not in use. Weigh and charge it in a fume hood, and wear appropriate laboratory gloves, safety glasses and a lab coat. Palladium on carbon that has been used in hydrogenation can ignite in air, especially when it is dry or wet with organic solvent. Keep filter cakes wet and dispose of spent catalyst according to institutional procedures and the supplier's safety data sheet.
