Quinoxaline TCI Q0020 (CAS 91-19-0) is an aromatic heterocyclic compound made of a benzene ring fused to a pyrazine ring. The pyrazine ring has two nitrogen atoms at positions 1 and 4. Quinoxaline belongs to the benzodiazine family and is a structural isomer of quinazoline, cinnoline, and phthalazine. The quinoxaline scaffold appears in many bioactive compounds, dyes, and organic electronic materials. In the laboratory, it is used as a fundamental building block, a ligand, and a reference compound for synthetic and analytical work.

Its two nitrogen atoms make the quinoxaline ring electron-deficient. For this reason, quinoxaline is often used as an electron-accepting unit in donor–acceptor molecules designed for optoelectronic materials. Both nitrogen atoms can also coordinate to metal ions, so quinoxaline is useful as a bridging ligand in coordination chemistry. In medicinal chemistry, the quinoxaline scaffold is widely studied for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer activity. Because this is the unsubstituted parent compound, researchers get a clean starting point for many different functionalization routes. TCI is a well-known brand, which gives research groups confidence in its consistency.

In Indonesia, quinoxaline suits research groups working in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, coordination chemistry, and materials science. University laboratories can use it to prepare new heterocyclic derivatives for undergraduate and graduate research projects. Research institutes developing bioactive candidates or organic electronic materials can use it as a core scaffold for structure–activity studies. It also works as a reference compound in teaching laboratories, where students learn about fused nitrogen heterocycles, aromaticity, and the reactivity of electron-deficient ring systems.

  • Heterocyclic synthesis: the unsubstituted quinoxaline core gives a clean starting point for functionalization, so chemists can build substituted derivatives without first removing unwanted groups.
  • Optoelectronic materials research: the electron-deficient ring works well as an acceptor unit in donor–acceptor molecular designs, which are studied for organic electronic and light-responsive materials.
  • Coordination chemistry: the two ring nitrogen atoms can bind metal ions, so quinoxaline can act as a bridging ligand when preparing metal complexes and coordination polymers.
  • Medicinal chemistry screening: the quinoxaline scaffold is widely studied for antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer activity, which makes the parent compound a useful base for building compound libraries.
  • Reference and teaching compound: as a simple benzodiazine, it shows students the structure and reactivity of fused nitrogen heterocycles and helps them compare isomers such as quinazoline and phthalazine.

  • Compound class: Benzodiazine (benzene ring fused with a pyrazine ring)

Store quinoxaline in its original, tightly closed TCI container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and incompatible materials such as strong oxidizing agents. Always check the product label and the TCI Safety Data Sheet for the exact recommended storage temperature. Handle the compound in a fume hood or a well-ventilated area. Wear nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and a lab coat. Avoid breathing in dust or vapours and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep the container clearly labelled, close it promptly after use to limit moisture and air exposure, and dispose of residues and contaminated materials according to institutional and local chemical waste regulations.
