2-Thenoyl Chloride from TCI, also known as thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride, is an acyl chloride derived from thiophene. It is a highly reactive heterocyclic building block used to attach the 2-thenoyl group to other molecules. In organic and medicinal chemistry laboratories, it acts as an acylating agent for making amides, esters, ketones and other thiophene derivatives. The thiophene ring is a common motif in pharmaceutical compounds, agrochemicals and organic electronic materials, so this reagent is a practical entry point into many research areas.
Researchers mainly choose 2-thenoyl chloride for the reactivity of its acyl chloride group. It reacts quickly with amines, alcohols and other nucleophiles under mild conditions, so the carboxylic acid does not need to be activated with extra coupling reagents. This makes both the synthesis and the purification simpler. The thiophene ring is also widely used as a bioisostere of the benzene ring. Chemists can use it to adjust the electronic properties, lipophilicity and biological activity of a target molecule while changing its structure only slightly.
In Indonesia, 2-thenoyl chloride is relevant to organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry research groups in pharmacy and chemistry faculties, as well as to research institutions working on new bioactive compounds. Typical work includes building small libraries of thiophene amides or esters for structure–activity relationship studies, preparing intermediates for multi-step synthesis, and student research projects on heterocyclic chemistry. Because it comes from the TCI brand, laboratories can use it as a consistent reagent across repeated experiments and longer research programmes.

- Amide synthesis: the reactive acyl chloride group couples quickly with primary and secondary amines under mild conditions, giving thiophene-2-carboxamides without separate carboxylic acid activation.
- Ester preparation: it reacts readily with alcohols and phenols to form 2-thenoyl esters, which helps when researchers need protected or functionalised thiophene intermediates for later synthetic steps.
- Ketone formation: as an acylating agent, it can be used in acylation routes that introduce the 2-thenoyl unit to make thiophene ketones for further chemical transformation.
- Medicinal chemistry and bioisostere studies: the thiophene ring can replace a benzene ring, so researchers can adjust lipophilicity, electronic character and biological activity with minimal structural change.
- Heterocyclic materials research: thiophene motifs appear in organic electronic materials, so this building block is useful for preparing thiophene-containing precursors in exploratory materials chemistry projects.

Like other acyl chlorides, 2-thenoyl chloride reacts with water and atmospheric moisture. Keep it in its original, tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from water, alcohols, amines, bases and oxidising agents. Open and dispense it only in a fume hood, ideally under dry or inert conditions, so that it does not hydrolyse and release irritating vapours. Wear suitable gloves, safety goggles and a lab coat when handling it, and avoid contact with skin, eyes and the respiratory tract. Always check the product label and Safety Data Sheet for the specific storage temperature and hazard information. Dispose of residues according to institutional chemical waste procedures.
