TCI B6408, chloromethyl benzoate (CAS 5335-05-7), is a highly electrophilic alkylating reagent used to install the benzoyloxymethyl group onto alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, thiols, and heterocyclic nitrogens. The acyloxymethyl motif it introduces is a well-established prodrug and protecting-group strategy, particularly for masking acidic or phosphate functionalities. Its reactivity also makes it useful for building linkers that can be released hydrolytically or by esterase action. AMI Scientific supplies it in 1 g and 5 g packs; the reagent is moisture-sensitive and a lachrymatory alkylator, so handle it in a fume hood and follow the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet.
