TCI C1180 (3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium Chloride (CAS 3327-22-8) is supplied as an aqueous solution of approximately 65% and acts as a well-known cationising reagent. Under basic conditions the adjacent chloro and hydroxyl groups form an epoxide intermediate that reacts with hydroxyl groups on starch, cellulose, or chitosan. This introduces permanent positive charges, altering solubility, adsorption behaviour, and interaction with negatively charged surfaces. Offered in 25 mL and 500 mL packs, it should be handled with gloves and eye protection and stored tightly closed in a cool place.
