Description

Glyoxal Bis(2-hydroxyanil), commonly abbreviated as GBHA, is a Schiff base compound formed by the condensation of glyoxal with two molecules of 2-aminophenol. Its symmetrical structure contains two imine groups and two phenolic hydroxyl groups arranged in a configuration that is highly suitable for binding metal ions. In the laboratory, this compound is widely recognised as a classical complexing reagent in chemical analysis, particularly for the spectrophotometric determination of calcium, while also serving as a tetradentate ligand in coordination chemistry research and the synthesis of transition metal complexes.

The principal characteristic that makes GBHA a preferred choice is its ability to form intensely coloured complexes with certain metal ions under alkaline conditions, so that the resulting colour change can be measured directly using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer without requiring expensive instrumentation. Its selectivity toward calcium within a particular pH range makes it an economical alternative to atomic spectroscopy based techniques. As a ligand, the N₂O₂ donor arrangement on its salen-like framework enables the formation of stable complexes with copper, nickel and cobalt, which are widely studied in catalysis research and magnetic materials.

In Indonesian laboratories, GBHA is typically used in analytical chemistry teaching and research settings where UV-Vis spectrophotometry is the primary available instrument. Academic laboratories, water and environmental testing units, and coordination chemistry research groups apply it for calcium determination work and for preparing metal complexes for further study. Its role as a colour-forming reagent allows quantitative analysis to be carried out with instrumentation that is already commonly present in most institutions.

Laboratory Applications

  • Spectrophotometric determination of calcium — GBHA forms a strongly coloured complex with calcium ions under alkaline conditions, allowing direct quantification with a standard UV-Vis spectrophotometer.
  • Coordination chemistry research — its tetradentate N₂O₂ donor set on a salen-like framework makes it a well-defined ligand for systematic studies of metal-ligand bonding behaviour.
  • Synthesis of transition metal complexes — the compound reacts with copper, nickel and cobalt to yield stable complexes suitable for isolation, characterisation and further chemical investigation.
  • Catalysis research — copper, nickel and cobalt complexes derived from this ligand are widely studied as model systems in investigations of catalytic activity and reaction mechanisms.
  • Magnetic materials research — metal complexes prepared from this Schiff base ligand are frequently examined for their magnetic behaviour in materials-oriented studies.

Handling and Storage

Store the container tightly closed in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or ignition. Amber glass bottles or the original manufacturer packaging are suitable, as they limit exposure to light and moisture that may degrade the reagent over time. Handle the material inside a fume hood, and wear safety goggles, a laboratory coat and chemically resistant gloves during weighing and solution preparation. Avoid the generation of dust, avoid inhalation and direct skin or eye contact, and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Keep the compound separated from strong oxidising agents and strong acids, and always consult the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet before use.
