Poly[4-(diacetoxyiodo)styrene] from TCI (product code P1415) is a hypervalent iodine reagent, specifically an iodine(III) species, attached to a polystyrene polymer backbone. In practice it is the solid-supported version of (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA), an oxidant used widely in organic synthesis. TCI lists it under solid supported synthesis. In the laboratory it serves as a fairly environmentally friendly oxidant that contains no heavy metals, and it makes separating the product from the reaction mixture much simpler than conventional reagents do.

The reagent's main advantage comes from its polymer support. When the reaction is complete, any unreacted reagent and its reduced by-product, poly(4-iodostyrene), stay in solid form. Both can be removed by simple filtration. This cuts down on the chromatography normally needed to remove iodobenzene when ordinary PIDA is used. The reduced polymer can also be re-oxidized back to the diacetoxy form and used again. Together, these features mean less waste, easier purification and cleaner reaction workups.

In Indonesian laboratories, this reagent suits university organic chemistry research groups, pharmaceutical and natural product research teams, and synthetic laboratories that want to reduce their reliance on heavy-metal oxidants. Because filtration takes the place of more demanding purification steps, it is useful where chromatography resources or solvent budgets are limited. It also fits greener synthesis teaching and research programmes, as well as projects that synthesize many compounds in parallel and need simple, repeatable workups.

  • Alcohol oxidation with TEMPO: the iodine(III) centre works with TEMPO to oxidize alcohols, and because the polymer support stays solid, the spent reagent can be filtered off and chromatography reduced.
  • α-Functionalization of ketones: the reagent carries out α-functionalization of ketones without heavy metals, and the solid reduced polymer is easy to remove after the reaction.
  • Phenol oxidation: as a supported PIDA equivalent, it oxidizes phenols, and the product can be separated by filtration instead of removing soluble iodobenzene by-products.
  • Oxidative cyclization reactions: it supports a range of oxidative cyclizations used to build ring systems, with a simpler workup that suits multistep synthetic sequences.
  • Recyclable and greener oxidation protocols: the reduced poly(4-iodostyrene) can be re-oxidized to the diacetoxy form, so it suits laboratories developing reusable, low-waste and metal-free oxidation methods.

Storage follow the storage conditions on the TCI label and Safety Data Sheet

Keep the reagent in its original, tightly closed manufacturer's container, in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area away from heat, direct light and moisture. Since it is an oxidizing reagent, store it apart from reducing agents, flammable materials and incompatible substances. Handle it in a fume hood and wear suitable personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses and a lab coat. Avoid creating or breathing in dust, and always read the TCI Safety Data Sheet before use. Dispose of spent and recovered polymer according to local laboratory waste regulations.
