Potassium Tris(1-pyrazolyl)borohydride from TCI (product code P1440) is the potassium salt of the tris(pyrazolyl)borate anion, more commonly known among chemists by the abbreviation KTp. The compound belongs to the "scorpionate" family of ligands: tridentate ligands that bind a metal through three nitrogen atoms from pyrazole rings. In the laboratory, KTp serves as a source of the Tp ligand for preparing transition metal complexes. TCI also lists it as a synthetic reagent in the reduction category because it has a reactive B–H bond.

Chemists choose this material because the Tp ligand gives a stable and predictable coordination environment. The three pyrazole rings occupy one face of the metal's coordination sphere (facial coordination), much like a cyclopentadienyl ligand, so Tp is often used as an alternative to Cp in organometallic chemistry. As a potassium salt, KTp is convenient for metathesis reactions with metal halides: the potassium halide that forms can be separated off, leaving the Tp–metal complex as the product. The B–H bond on the boron atom is also a useful spectroscopic marker for following reactions.

In Indonesia, KTp is relevant to inorganic and organometallic chemistry research groups at universities, particularly those studying homogeneous catalysts and the coordination behaviour of transition metals. Postgraduate laboratories working on new metal complexes can use it as a standard ligand precursor. Synthetic chemistry groups exploring reagents with B–H bonds may also find it useful. It suits research settings where reproducible ligand sources from a recognised brand such as TCI matter for comparing results with published work.

  • Synthesis of transition metal Tp complexes: KTp provides the Tp ligand directly, and its potassium counterion allows straightforward metathesis with metal halides to form the desired complex.
  • Organometallic chemistry as a Cp alternative: the facial, tridentate binding of three pyrazole rings resembles cyclopentadienyl coordination, so researchers can compare or replace Cp ligands in metal complexes.
  • Homogeneous catalysis research: the stable and predictable coordination environment of the Tp ligand helps researchers design and study well-defined metal catalysts in solution.
  • Reduction chemistry in synthesis: TCI classifies this compound as a reduction reagent because of its reactive B–H bond, which makes it relevant to reduction-related synthetic work.
  • Spectroscopic monitoring of reactions: the B–H bond on boron gives a useful spectroscopic marker, helping chemists follow ligand transfer and reaction progress during complex preparation.

Storage follow the storage conditions on the TCI label and Safety Data Sheet

Store Potassium Tris(1-pyrazolyl)borohydride in its original tightly closed TCI container, in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place away from moisture, acids and incompatible materials, and follow the specific conditions on the product label. Because the compound has a reactive B–H bond, keep containers sealed when not in use and avoid needless exposure to air and humidity. Handle it in a fume hood while wearing gloves, safety glasses and a lab coat. Avoid breathing in dust or touching it with bare skin. Read the TCI Safety Data Sheet before use, and dispose of waste according to institutional and local regulations.
