Palladium 5% on Carbon, AD type (wetted with ca 55% Water) from TCI is a heterogeneous catalyst made of 5% palladium metal dispersed on an activated carbon support. It is supplied wet, with a water content of about 55%. Palladium on carbon (Pd/C) is one of the most widely used catalysts in organic synthesis laboratories. It is mainly used to hydrogenate double bonds, reduce nitro groups, and remove protecting groups such as benzyl and Cbz by hydrogenolysis. The listed CAS number, 7440-05-3, refers to the element palladium.
TCI offers several types of 5% Pd/C, and the AD type is one of them. The types can differ in the character of the carbon support and in their catalytic activity, so the right choice can affect reaction rate and selectivity. For a technical comparison between types, refer to TCI's official technical data. The wet form, with about 55% water, is an important safety advantage. Dry Pd/C can be pyrophoric and may ignite organic solvent vapours or hydrogen. The water content lowers this risk during weighing, transfer, and reactor charging, which makes the material easier to handle safely in routine laboratory work.
In Indonesian laboratories, Pd/C is essential for pharmaceutical synthesis, natural product chemistry, and catalysis research. University research groups, pharmaceutical development laboratories, and industrial R&D teams use it to prepare intermediates, deprotect synthetic targets, and study hydrogenation reactions. Because it is a heterogeneous catalyst, it can be filtered out of the reaction mixture after use. This makes it practical for both small-scale academic work and process development, where a dependable, well-documented catalyst from an established brand such as TCI is preferred.

- Hydrogenation of carbon–carbon double and triple bonds: the dispersed palladium on activated carbon catalyses hydrogen addition to unsaturated bonds, a routine step when preparing saturated organic compounds.
- Reduction of aromatic nitro groups to amines: Pd/C is a standard catalyst for converting nitro compounds into anilines, which are important building blocks in pharmaceutical and dye intermediate synthesis.
- Hydrogenolysis of benzyl protecting groups: the catalyst cleaves benzyl ethers and benzyl esters under hydrogen, so protected alcohols and acids can be released cleanly in multistep synthesis.
- Removal of Cbz (benzyloxycarbonyl) protecting groups: Pd/C-catalysed hydrogenolysis frees amines from Cbz protection, a step widely used in peptide chemistry and in synthesising nitrogen-containing drug candidates.
- Catalysis research and method development: offering several Pd/C types, including the AD type, lets researchers compare how catalyst type affects reaction rate and selectivity in their own hydrogenation studies.

Keep Palladium 5% on Carbon in its original tightly closed container in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from heat, ignition sources, and flammable solvents. Do not let the catalyst dry out, because dry Pd/C can be pyrophoric. Used catalyst recovered by filtration is especially hazardous and should be kept wet with water at all times. Under an inert atmosphere, add the catalyst to the reaction vessel before adding organic solvents, and purge the system properly before introducing hydrogen. Wear safety glasses, gloves, and a lab coat. Collect spent catalyst separately for proper disposal or precious-metal recovery. Always follow the Safety Data Sheet supplied by TCI.
