5-Sulfosalicylic Acid Dihydrate from TCI is a derivative of salicylic acid with a sulfonic acid group at the 5-position of the aromatic ring, and it is supplied as the dihydrate. Sulfosalicylic acid is a familiar reagent in analytical and clinical laboratories. It is used to precipitate proteins in turbidity tests, to form a coloured complex with iron(III) ions, and as an indicator in complexometric titrations of iron. It is also an aromatic building block that carries three different acidic groups on a single ring, which makes it useful in synthetic and research work.

Laboratories choose this compound because it combines phenolic hydroxyl, carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid groups in one molecule. The hydroxyl and carboxyl groups sit next to each other and form an effective chelating site for metal ions, especially iron(III). The resulting complexes produce a colour that can be judged by eye or measured by spectrophotometry. The strongly acidic sulfonic acid group makes the compound good at denaturing and precipitating proteins. The dihydrate is a fairly stable crystalline solid that is easy to weigh, and it dissolves well in water, so reagent solutions are simple to prepare.

In Indonesia, this reagent is especially relevant to analytical chemistry laboratories, teaching and clinical laboratories, and research institutions. University teaching laboratories use it to demonstrate metal-complex formation and complexometric titration. Clinical and health laboratories rely on it for protein precipitation tests. Quality control and environmental laboratories use it to detect and measure iron in water and other samples. Research groups in organic and materials chemistry can use it as a multifunctional aromatic building block when they need sulfonated or chelating structures.

  • Protein precipitation in turbidity tests: the strongly acidic sulfonic acid group denatures and precipitates proteins, so the reagent gives turbidity that can be observed in clinical and teaching protein tests.
  • Colorimetric detection of iron(III): the adjacent hydroxyl and carboxyl groups chelate iron(III) to form a coloured complex that can be assessed visually or measured by spectrophotometry.
  • Indicator for complexometric iron titration: its coloured complex with iron(III) changes as the metal is bound by the titrant, which makes it a practical endpoint indicator in iron determinations.
  • Teaching demonstrations of chelation chemistry: because it is water-soluble and easy to weigh, instructors can quickly prepare solutions that show metal-ligand complex formation and colour change to students.
  • Aromatic building block in synthesis: with phenolic hydroxyl, carboxylic and sulfonic acid groups on one ring, it is a versatile starting material for sulfonated or metal-chelating structures in research.

Storage keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from moisture and incompatible materials

Store 5-Sulfosalicylic Acid Dihydrate in its original, tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, moisture and strong bases or oxidizing agents. Keep the container closed when not in use so the hydration state and reagent quality stay consistent. Glass or chemically resistant plastic containers are suitable for prepared solutions, and they should be clearly labelled with the concentration and preparation date. This is an acidic compound, so wear safety glasses, gloves and a laboratory coat. Avoid creating or inhaling dust, and weigh the solid in a fume hood or a well-ventilated area. If it contacts skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Always read the supplier's Safety Data Sheet before use and follow local regulations for chemical waste disposal.
