TCI Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Sulfosuccinate Sodium Salt, also known as docusate sodium or AOT, is an anionic surfactant. Each molecule has a negatively charged sulfosuccinate head group and two branched 2-ethylhexyl alkyl chains. In the laboratory, it belongs to the polymer and macromolecule reagents and sits within the polymer additives group. It is widely used as a wetting agent, emulsifier and dispersant. It is also well known as a classic surfactant for forming reverse micelles and water-in-oil microemulsions.

Researchers choose this material mainly for its distinctive molecular shape. It has two branched hydrophobic chains and one relatively small ionic head. Because of this, AOT readily forms reverse micelles in nonpolar solvents without needing a co-surfactant, which few other surfactants can do. The size of the water core inside these reverse micelles can be tuned through the water-to-surfactant ratio. This makes the system a controlled nanoscale reaction environment. AOT also lowers surface tension and improves wetting, so it is useful in polymer, coating and dispersion formulations.

In Indonesia, this reagent is relevant to university research groups, polymer and materials science laboratories, and industrial R&D facilities that work with formulations. Common uses include studying reverse micelle systems, preparing water-in-oil microemulsions as templates for nanoparticle synthesis, and assessing wetting and dispersion in coatings and polymer blends. Its well-documented behaviour makes it a standard reference surfactant for teaching laboratories and for comparing new surfactant systems against established ones.

TCI brochures (PDF)

  • Reverse micelle formation: the two branched hydrophobic chains and small ionic head let AOT form reverse micelles in nonpolar solvents without a co-surfactant, which simplifies how the system is prepared.
  • Water-in-oil microemulsions: AOT is a classic surfactant for stabilising water-in-oil microemulsions, giving researchers a well-characterised system for studying emulsion structure and behaviour.
  • Nanoscale reaction environments: the water core size can be tuned through the water-to-surfactant ratio, so the reverse micelles act as controlled nanoreactors for templated synthesis work.
  • Polymer and coating formulations: AOT lowers surface tension and improves wetting, so it is useful as an additive in polymer, coating and dispersion formulations under development.
  • Wetting, emulsifying and dispersing studies: its established roles as a wetting agent, emulsifier and dispersant make it a dependable reference surfactant for comparative formulation experiments.

Store Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Sulfosuccinate Sodium Salt in its original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it away from incompatible materials such as strong oxidising agents. Reseal the container promptly after each use so the material does not take up moisture or become contaminated. When handling, wear suitable personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves and a laboratory coat. Do not let it contact the eyes or skin, and do not create or breathe in dust or aerosols. Work in a fume hood or a well-ventilated area. Always read the product-specific Safety Data Sheet before use, and dispose of waste according to local regulations.
