Methylammonium bromide (MABr, CAS 6876-37-5), also known as methylamine hydrobromide, is a perovskite precursor used to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites for photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes and field-effect transistors. This M571 grade reaches >99.995% purity, obtained by recrystallising the 99.995% M572 material. It is supplied as white crystals or powder with a melting point of 296 °C.
MABr is the starting material for MAPbBr3 perovskites, which have a band gap of 2.3 eV. Because of this wide gap, MAPbBr3 is used to adjust the band gap of mixed-halide MAPbX3 perovskites, to absorb high-energy photons, and as the front cell in tandem devices. Bromide perovskites can also deliver a higher open-circuit voltage than their iodide counterparts, with pure MAPbBr3 cells reported at a VOC of up to 1.40 V.
In light emission, MAPbBr3 nanoplatelets have shown bright photoluminescence at 529 nm with a narrow band and a quantum yield up to 85%. Ossila MABr has been used in published work on perovskite grain size and solar cell efficiency (Q. Lian et al., ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, 2020).
