Methylammonium iodide (MAI), CAS 14965-49-2, is a white crystalline perovskite precursor used to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites for photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes and field-effect transistors. It is also known as methylamine hydroiodide. Product M271 is the recrystallised grade with >99.9% purity, obtained by recrystallising the 99.9% grade twice from ethanol.
Because recrystallisation strips out trace residual hydroiodic acid (HI) left from synthesis, this grade is less soluble in DMF and DMSO than the standard material, and solar cell efficiency may be lower if no acid is added back. Adding a controlled amount of HI lets researchers dose the acid precisely, improving reproducibility. Between 1% and 10% HI is recommended with this grade; the right amount depends on the precursors, solution concentration, solvent and processing environment, so each lab should tune it. For simpler ink preparation, the 99.9% non-recrystallised grade is the easier choice.
Ossila MAI was used in the published study on strontium insertion in methylammonium lead iodide (D. Pérez-del-Rey et al., Adv. Mater., 28, 9839-9845 (2016)). Reference MAI:PbCl2 devices made with a 3:1 molar ratio ink in DMF reached an average efficiency of 8.89% (9.57% maximum) under non-optimised conditions.
