Methylammonium iodide (MAI), also known as methylamine hydroiodide (CAS 14965-49-2), is a white crystalline solid used as a starting material for organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. These perovskites are studied for photovoltaic cells, light-emitting diodes and field-effect transistors.
Product M272 is the non-recrystallized grade with a purity of 99.9%, determined by ICP-OES. The manufacturer recommends this grade where straightforward ink preparation is the priority. Highly purified, recrystallized MAI dissolves less readily in DMF and DMSO because trace hydroiodic acid has been removed, while this grade avoids that extra step. DMF and DMSO are the recommended solvents for perovskite synthesis.
In the manufacturer's reference perovskite solar cells, MAI was combined with PbCl2 at a 3:1 molar ratio in DMF at 664 mg/ml, giving an average efficiency of 8.89% after light soaking and a maximum of 9.57% under non-optimized conditions. Ossila MAI has also been cited in published research on strontium insertion in methylammonium lead iodide solar cells.
