PCBM, or [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, is a solution-processable derivative of the buckminsterfullerene C60. Its phenyl and butyric acid methyl ester groups make the fullerene soluble, so it can be handled with the same common solvents used for donor polymers. This grade, M0111A1, has a purity of >99% and is the grade suggested for general organic photovoltaic (OPV) work.
PCBM ranks among the most widely used electron acceptors in OPV devices and also serves as an electron transport material in bulk heterojunction perovskite-PCBM solar cells. Because polymer and fullerene can be cast together from one solution, researchers can form an efficient bulk heterojunction in a single step. Paired with a donor polymer, PCBM supports fast, efficient charge transfer and exciton dissociation, and it offers high electron mobility.
The material has a molecular weight of 911 g/mol, with HOMO at -6.1 eV and LUMO at -3.7 eV. For OFET work demanding the highest crystallization and mobility, a higher-purity grade is the recommended choice.
- Electron acceptor in polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic devices.
- Electron transport layer material in bulk heterojunction perovskite-PCBM solar cells.
- Co-casting with donor polymers from common solvents to build an interpenetrating bulk heterojunction.
- Research on organic semiconducting materials and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
