PCBM, or [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (CAS 160848-22-6), is a fullerene derivative widely chosen as the electron acceptor in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. Its phenyl and butyric acid methyl ester groups make it a solubilized form of buckminsterfullerene C60, so it dissolves in the same common solvents used for donor polymers.
Because polymer and fullerene can be cast together from a single solution, PCBM readily forms an efficient bulk heterojunction. Paired with a donor polymer, it supports fast, efficient charge transfer and exciton dissociation, and it offers high electron mobility. It also serves as an electron transport material in bulk heterojunction perovskite-PCBM solar cells.
This grade has a purity of >99.5%, which is suggested for organic field-effect transistor (OFET) work where the highest crystallization and mobility are needed. The material has a molecular weight of 911 g/mol, with HOMO at -6.1 eV and LUMO at -3.7 eV.
