PCBM, or [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (CAS 160848-22-6), is a soluble derivative of the buckminsterfullerene C60. Its phenyl and butyric acid methyl ester groups make the fullerene soluble, so it is one of the most widely used electron acceptors in organic photovoltaic (OPV) research and also serves as an electron transport material in perovskite-PCBM bulk heterojunction solar cells.
Because PCBM dissolves in the same common solvents used for donor polymers, polymer and fullerene can be cast together from a single solution to form an efficient bulk heterojunction. Paired with a donor polymer, it supports fast, efficient charge transfer and exciton dissociation, and it offers high electron mobility.
This grade is supplied at >99.9% purity. Ossila recommends the 99% grade for general OPV work and the 99.5% grade for OFETs where maximum crystallization and mobility are needed; the highest-purity option suits the most demanding device studies. Energy levels are HOMO = -6.1 eV and LUMO = -3.7 eV.
- Electron acceptor in polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic devices.
- Electron transport layer in perovskite and integrated perovskite/organic bulk heterojunction solar cells.
- Active semiconductor in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) requiring high crystallization and mobility.
- Co-casting with donor polymers from common solvents to form blended active layers.
